I paint colourful, expressive, energetic pictures, which spring from my lifelong enjoyment of the natural world. I usually work outdoors in front of the subject, in direct response to the enduring forms of the landscape, and to the fleeting changes of light, colour and weather. I am largely self-taught. When I started painting seriously in the 1980s, I spent some years concentrating in turn on various aspects of the natural world: trees, flowers, birds, animals, skies, rocks, water, and people, including life drawing. I explored various painting media: watercolours, acrylics, oils, gouache, pen and ink, crayon. I also studied with the Open College of the Arts for one year. I now work mainly in watercolours, acrylics and mixed media, and I continue to take great pleasure in filling sketchbooks, wherever I am. My enduring theme is the landscape: Cambridgeshire fens, Suffolk Breckland, Norfolk beaches, Yorkshire Dales, Scottish moorland - the landscape wherever I am. In particular, I paint trees, whether the Scots Pines and Silver Birches of the Suffolk Brecklands, or the magnificent trees in Cambridge city such as the Oriental Plane in Emmanuel College. I exhibit annually with Cambridge Open Studios, the Cambridge Drawing Society, the Society of East Anglian Watercolourists and the Fountain Group. My work has been on show at Wicken Fen since 2008. I have paintings in the collections of Emmanuel College and Clare Hall, Cambridge.
